Restauro das Jantes - Wheels restoring

35 Anos depois, decidi que estava na altura de reparar as jantes. Então nada melhor que enviar para Braga, para desempenar e pintar.

After 35 years, the wheals needed to be restored.So I took them out and sent them to a specialized shop, in Braga, Portugal.

Entretanto enquato esperava pelas jantes ... aproveitei para dar uma limpeza e tirar a ferrugem aos tambores dos travões traseiros. Foi dado um conversor de ferrugem escova de aço e lixa. Falta pintar com tinta preta de alta temperatura!

Meanwhile and because the rear drums were rusted, I removed them and cleaned it, and sanded it to prepare for paint.I've painted it with high temperature black ink!

Por fim, e passado 15 das lá chegaram as jantes de Braga ... 32€ cada mais IVA !!!

Mas o trabalho justifica a fama da casa, e estão impecáveis. Antes de montar as jantes foi feita uma limpeza, para tirar a terra acomulada.Tudo à base de muita esfrega, trincha e petroleo.

After 15 days, the wheals arrived. They cost me 32€ plus vat (21%) !!!
But the work is just perfect they look great. Before placing the wheels I’ve cleaned the wheel hole with petrol brush and a lots of arm’s hard work.

Volante NOVO - NEW Steering wheel

Faltava apresentar o novo volante já instalado no lugar!!!
Now I present you the new steering wheel already installed.

Aproveitei também o fim de semana da páscoa para trocar as chapas das matriculas, que já andavam na garagem à muito tempo.

Last weekend I've also changed the licence plates. These ones are like the ones used in the 70's.

A saga do volante do Manta SR - Rallye steering wheel

Tenho estado a mudar o volante do Manta para o "novo" que recebi entretanto.

Since I already had the Rallye gauge pod. I started the search for a good Rallye steering wheel.David MacCollam helped me on that search and in a few weeks the wheel was on his way to Portugal.

O volante já está a marinar em WD40 à 3dias... já tentei fazer com que ele se mova, oscilando e puxando!No manual d fábrica que tenho em pdf, fala lá e uma ferramenta especifica que segundo a minha interpretação é a seguinte:
When the new wheel got here I started to think how to take out the old one. But … after 35 years it was not an easy job.

O volante original foi fácil de perceber como se desmonta ... saquei a almofada da buzina e a porca que aperta ao veio fica à mostra. Já a desapertei, tive de arranjar uma adaptação para o saca que me emprestram encaixar nos respectivos buracos do volante.

A friend here in Portugal gave me a pulling tool that I’ve adapted to fit the wheel holes.

A ferramenta funciona mas ... Mesmo apertando muito, o volante não sai do sitio. Isto mesmo depois de uns dias a marinar em WD40!!!

But the old wheel was stubborn… even after a few days in WD40 (oil).And the tool was damaging the wheel and the steering shaft.

Entretanto, dos EUA chegou uma fermenta especifica para sacar volantes OPEL.

Mas o afastamento dos "braços" da ferramenta não era sufeciente para encaixar nos buracos especificos do volante. Logo, tive de tirar umas medidas, e fazer uma nova peça para o saca, de forma a conseguir o afastamento correcto para a furação do meu volante!Mas melhor que a explicação ... vejam as fotos.

So, once again Dave helped me teaching me some techniques … and sending me one original GM/Opel steering wheel puller.When it arrived I taught that all my problems were finished … but the offset between the puller “arms” was not enough to fit the wheel holes.

Depois de aplicada a ferramenta correcta e mais de 15 dias depois das primeiras tentativas, o volante lá se resolveu a sair!!!

So I made a new part with the correct offset, assembled it and after a few turns the wheel was out!!!

Depois de uns dias de chuva, um fim de tarde com um céu nebuloso e uma luz magnifica. Foi sair do trabalho, pegar no carro e na maquina fotográfica, acelerar até à serra para fazer uns registos.

After a few raining days… a cloudy sunset with a magnificent light. It was get out of work, pick up the Manta and the camera, and run to the shooting place.
